- About
The Uyuni Salt Flat in Bolivia is the largest salt desert on the planet and one of South America’s must-visit destinations. Covering over 10,000 km², this vast white plain creates the sensation that the sky and earth meet at the horizon. During the rainy season, the salt flat transforms into a natural mirror, multiplying landscapes and revealing surreal, otherworldly scenes.
The experience, however, goes far beyond Uyuni itself. The crossings traverse some of the most stunning landscapes of the Bolivian Altiplano: colorful lagoons, geysers, high-altitude deserts, rocky valleys, thermal pools, and small communities that preserve local traditions. It’s a journey full of contrasts, extreme nature, and discoveries at every turn.
At Aroeira Travel, each crossing is carefully planned to combine comfort, safety, and authenticity—a deep dive into one of the most remote, vast, and fascinating destinations in the Andes.
Rainy Season & Summer
December to March
During the rainy season, the Salar de Uyuni may transform into a vast natural mirror, creating its iconic reflections of the sky. Daytime temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C (59°F–68°F), with cold nights between 0°C and 5°C (32°F–41°F). This is the best time for mirror photography, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Autumn
April to May
Autumn marks a transition to drier conditions, with fewer visitors and a more tranquil atmosphere. Some reflective areas may still appear, while temperatures remain mild during the day (12°C to 18°C / 54°F–64°F) and cold at night (-2°C to 5°C / 28°F–41°F). Ideal for those seeking a quieter experience.
Dry Season & Winter
June to August
In winter, the salt flats are completely dry, revealing their endless white surface. Days are sunny and cold (10°C to 15°C / 50°F–59°F), while nights can drop below -10°C (14°F). This is the best season for exploring the region and for stargazing under exceptionally clear skies.
Spring
September to November
Spring brings a gradual rise in temperatures, with daytime highs between 12°C and 20°C (54°F–68°F) and cold nights. Small lagoons and migratory birds begin to appear, signaling the approach of the rainy season and adding life to the landscape.
